Ofena: has a rich history both past and more recently.
There is one restaurant in the local Bar Aufinium, serving very good food (best to book as the menu is what she has available). However, there are many local agro tourism places and tavernas etc within a short drive.
In addition, there are three village shops, a variety of visiting mobile shops including fresh fish. One club/bar where you can watch sport and play table games and possibly in the future a computer. A variety of butchers that only open when they have killed an animal - A mosaic shop where you can commission mosaics that are true works of art. There is also a local artist.
The village commune is a friendly place and the local community policeman speaks English and is very helpful.
There is a Canadian Expat club with a website in Ontario. Ofena is the home to two award winning vineyards. Gentile and Cataldi Madonna.
Ofena is is surrounded by some of the highest mountains in Italy. It is in the heart of three National Parks and on the edge of the Gran Sasso. The Olympic cross country skiing was held in this area and there are several ski resorts nearby. The nearest being in Castel del Monte 17 Km away.
Barbara Summers Offers a variety of cooking holidays from time to time based in her home in the old part of Ofena.
There are many walks in the area - you can discover them yourself or go for a more tailored made walk. If you head up to the top of town and keep walking you will see signposts to places you can walk or ride to. For Horse Riding please contact me on pamela@weryourit.com
